Training

We run regular training classes, normally once per month between February-July each year, with a number of trainers.  Although these classes are for members, we welcome prospective members.  If you have not been before, come along and introduce yourself and you will be put into an appropriate class.  We generally have between 3-5 groups at each training session but try to keep each group to a manageable size. The trainers, all of whom are very experienced, will adapt their classes to meet the differing needs of the dogs to ensure success for everyone.

At the last training class of each year, The Baveybuilt Training Award for the Most Improved Trainee (kindly donated by Jean Baveystock) is awarded to the handler who in the opinion of the trainers, has progressed furthest at Club training that year.

Training starts at 10:00 promptly and we suggest you arrive from about 09:30 onwards.  Classes generally last about 2 hours, sometimes shorter for younger dogs  Only one dog per handler per class please and the cost is £10 per class (payable on the day by cash or bank transfer). Depending on the weather, you may need warm and waterproof clothing, a slip lead, whistle and 2 x clean canvas dummies (1lb or 1/2 lb) marked with your name.  Don't worry if you don't have a dummy - they will be available to buy from the club on the day.

We ran 6 training classes in 2025 between February-July but training for 2025 has now finished.  As soon as the dates for 2026 have been finalised, they will be listed on this page.

If you would like more information about Club training, please contact our Training Co-ordinator, Lisa Murrell, at lisa.gwgc@gmail.com or 07710 147127.

If you are planning on attending a Club training session, please e-mail Lisa in advance (lisa.gwgc@gmail.com) so that she has some idea of numbers (but this doesn't mean late the night before please!).  She won’t hold you to it but it really helps us to have an idea of how many trainers we will need for each session so that the classes are not too large.

Tea/Coffee and biscuits are always available at the end of training - free of charge!

All of our classes take place outside so, before you bring your dog to a class, he/she will need to walk sensibly at heel on the lead, to be able to work off the lead and to recall to you, reasonably reliably, over short distances.  All dogs must be well socialised with other dogs. We suggest that you do not bring your dog until he/she is at least six months old.

Non-Retriever breeds

We do not currently have a Spaniel or HPR section but recommend contacting The Kennel Club for details of clubs which provide this - https://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/activities/field-trials-working-gundogs

Both Arun & Downland Gundog Society and Hampshire Gundog Society have an active Spaniel section and hold Spaniel training classes and we recommend contacting them:
